SEIU Requires Some Members to Disclose Social Security Numbe

Some SEIU Contracts Require Social Security Numbers to Be Sent to the Union

This is not speculation.

Some SEIU contracts require employers to provide the union with employee rosters that include workers’ Social Security numbers.

Does yours?

Will it in the future?

In Washington, the SEIU 775 contract with the State requires employer data files to include workers’ Social Security numbers. The agreement also says those numbers will be sent electronically to the union.

A separate SEIU 775 contract with Home Care Services LLC requires the employer to provide SEIU with a monthly employee list that includes Social Security numbers, phone numbers, addresses, birthdates, gender, wage rates, gross pay, dues deductions, and other payroll information.

An SEIU Local 521 contract with Addus Healthcare similarly required the employer to furnish the union with employee lists that included Social Security numbers.

Your employer may need your Social Security number for payroll and tax reporting.

SEIU is not payroll.

Workers deserve to know why a union needs access to one of the most sensitive pieces of personal information they have.

Data Breaches Are Not Theoretical

When unions collect sensitive personal information, workers deserve to know how that information is stored, who can access it, and what happens if it is exposed.

SEIU 1000 reportedly suffered a ransomware attack involving sensitive union data.

The Pennsylvania State Education Association also suffered a major data breach involving sensitive personal information.

A Social Security number in the wrong hands can create real problems for real workers.

Your privacy should not be treated like union property.
